Relevant Information:
How philosophy can help you find the information that you really need

Luciano Floridi
Philosophy and Information Policy, Oxford University
Abstract: How do we know when some information is relevant? In this lecture, I will introduce the general debate on informational relevancy in a variety of contexts (including search engines, information retrieval, online advertising, juridical procedures, everyday information processes, medical diagnosis, and scientific experiments). I will then present a general theory of relevant information and show it to provide a satisfactory answer to the initial question.

Date: Thursday, February 8th, 2007
Time: Reception at 5:30pm, Lecture at 6:30pm
Location: Room 205 Swede Johnson (1111 N. Cherry Ave.)

Note: This lecture is also supported by a grant from the University of Arizona's International Visitors Fund. Floridi will also give talks to the Center for Consciousness Studies and the Philosophy Department during his visit to the University of Arizona.
