Celebrating 10 Years of Knowledge River at the University of Arizona

November 4-5, 2011 Tucson, Arizona

Knowledge River will host a 10th anniversary celebration, with an informal Friday evening dinners around Tucson, and Saturday events including an alumni meeting, workshops and special guest speakers, and a fundraiser reception. Please join us in celebrating 10 years of Knowledge River!

All events, except for the Alumni Town Hall Meeting, are open to the public. We hope to see lots of Knowledge River alumni, students, and friends of Knowledge River at this event.

  • Session 1. How I Landed My First Librarian Job And What I Did 'In Between 1:15-2:15
    Description: New library professionals have been particularly affected by today's economic climate. Facing a tough job market, many are unemployed, underemployed, or employed outside the field. This program features panelists that have successfully leveraged extended periods of job seeking into fantastic job offers. Current students and recent graduates will receive honest, hard-hitting advice on how to maximize their "in between" time, as well as glean inspiration from peers that have finally landed their first librarian position.

    Description: You have worked hard, paid your dues, and made the move from novice to expert. Now what? This session is aimed at Library and Information professionals with five to ten years of professional experience, and will offer candid, strategic advice from Knowledge River alumni who have transitioned into leadership roles within their organizations. The discussion will include tips on career planning and developing your personal leadership style. Information on professional development opportunities and resources will also be provided.

  • Session 3: A CONVERSATION WITH DISTINGUISHED GUESTS CAMILA ALIRE AND CHERYL METOYER ON LEADERSHIP 3:35-4:35

    Speakers:

    Dr. Cheryl Metoyer, Associate Professor and the Associate Dean for Research, University of Washington Information School

    Cheryl Metoyer is an Associate Professor and the Associate Dean for Research at the University of Washington, Information School. She is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in American Indian Studies at UW. Dr. Metoyer's research interests include indigenous systems of knowledge with an emphasis on American Indian and Alaska Native tribal nations; information seeking behaviors in cultural communities; and ethics and leadership in cultural communities.  After completing her degree, Dr. Metoyer, working as a Project Director at the National Indian Education Association, assisted tribes and state agencies in planning and developing library services in urban and reservations communities. Over the years, she has had the honor of assisting the Mashantucket Pequot, Cahuilla, San Manuel, Yakama, Navajo, Seneca, Mohawk and the Lakota nations in the development of their libraries, archives and museums.

    Dr. Metoyer is also the Director of the Indigenous Information Research Group (IIRG) at the Information School. Before joining the iSchool faculty, Dr. Metoyer was the Chief Academic Affairs Officer for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. She also served on the faculty of the UCLA Graduate School of Library and Information Science. From 1993 to 1997, Dr. Metoyer held the Rupert Costo Chair in American Indian History at the University of California, Riverside.  In 2006, she was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship in the Humanities to pursue her study of Native American systems of knowledge.

    Over the years, Dr. Metoyer has been a member of several advisory boards, including the Newberry Library D’Arcy McNickle Center for American Indian History, the Southwest Museum, the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the U.S. Department of the Interior, the National Museum of the American Indian, and the University of Arizona, Knowledge River Program. She also holds the distinction of being elected as the American Indian delegate to the White House Conference on Libraries and Information Services. Recently, Dr. Metoyer was appointed to the UW House of Knowledge Planning Committee.

    She has published in major research journals, including College & Research Libraries, Library and Information Science Research, and the American Indian Culture and Research Journal. The Association of College and Research Libraries honored her book, "Gatekeepers in Ethnolinguistic Communities."

    Dr. Camila Alire is Dean Emeritus at the University of New Mexico and Colorado State University.  Camila received her doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Colorado and an MLS from the University of Denver.
 
Camila is immediate past president of ALA.  She is past-president (2005/06) of the Association for College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and also past-president of national REFORMA.
 
Camila has co-authored books on academic librarianship, emotionally intelligent leadership, library service to Latino communities; and disaster planning/recovery.   She was recently honored in 2011 with the ALA/Lippincott Award for Distinguished Service; the CALA Presidential Recognition Award, and the ALA Achievement in Library Diversity Research Award.    She was awarded the first ALA Elizabeth Futas Catalyst for Change award and the National REFORMA’s Librarian of the Year award.  Camila was named Scholar-in-Residence for the Chicago Public Library System.  Hispanic Business Magazine named Camila one year as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in the U.S.

Join us for a fabulous night to celebrate the 10 years of Knowledge River! The evening will offer music, food, photos, a silent auction, and opportunities to connect and reconnect with Knowledge River students and alumni, as well as KR friends, supporters, and special guests.
