SIRLS students graduating under 2006 and later graduation requirements may take up to two courses outside of the School of Information Resources and Library Science. It is recommended that these be taken in a field or discipline that is relevant to the specific professional goals of the individual student. The student's faculty advisor must approve these courses before they are taken.
*Students graduating under pre-2006 graduation requirements are required to take two courses outside of the School of Information Resources and Library Science.

A ED 503 -- Collaborative Leadership
(3 units)
Collaborative Leadership is designed to offer students an opportunity to learn and apply leadership concepts and skills within the context of the campus community. Graduate-level requirements include an extra interview, reading of two books rather than just one, and writing a longer paper. |

Practice (3 units) A hands-on course which explores experiential teaching and learning through integration of readings and writing, application of concepts, modeling of principles, and thoughtful reflection. Graduate-level requirements include an additional research report. |
| ART 547 -- Mixed Media Book (3 units) Investigation of the book as a format for presenting visual material; the process of making simple books. Contemporary bookmakers will be presented. Graduate-level requirements include an in-depth research project on a single aspect of a current scholarly interest. |

| ARH 596L -- Seminar in Museum Studies:From Cabinets of Curiosity to Cyberspace (3 units) The development and exchange of scholarly information, usually in a small group setting. The scope of work shall consist of research by course registrants, with the exchange of the result of such research through discussion, reports, and/or papers. |

(3 units) Essentials of computer operations; integration of computer technologies into the classroom; learning theory; instructional design in the use of technologies; use of presentation and related software; use and evaluation of computer-assisted instruction software. Graduate-level requirements include a substantial multimedia production project. |

(3 units) Design of multimedia for instructional applications with an emphasis in production techniques and programming tools. Graduate-level requirements include justification of production with learning bases. |

| F A 532A -- Interactivity (3 units) This course explores the process of creating interactive computer art by teaching the essential principles of programming. Graduate-level requirements include a more indepth research in related artworks and in-depth oral presentation of their findings. Secondly, they will organize the programming of the final collaborative project. |
| F A 535A -- Digital Arts Theory (3 units) This course is an introduction to the theories of Structuralism, Post-Structuralism and Postmodernism and an investigation of how these theories inform the digital arts. Graduate-level requirements include producing three 30 minute digital presentations, take one essay exam, and prepare 2 digital research papers that are 5-10 pages in length. |

(3 units) The scope of higher education in the United States; brief survey of historical developments and philosophic bases, public policy issues at the state and federal level; types of institutions and their purposes; characteristics of faculty, students and curricula. |

| LRC 580 -- Children's Literature in the Classroom
(3 units) Analysis and discussion of classic and contemporary children's literature of all genres, and its relationship to language, reading and culture. Graduate-level requirements include an in-depth research paper or other project. |
| LRC 581 -- Multiethnic Literature and Literacy (3
units) Analyzes the use of multiethnic literature that fosters self-concept, acceptance, and a sense of identity to develop literacy. Includes readings from the major categories of multiethnic literature about Black, Native, Hispanic, and Asian Americans. |
| LRC 585 -- Literature for Adolescents (3 units) This course offers teachers, librarians, and others an opportunity to explore and critique the wealth of literature written especially for young adult readers. |
| MIS 511 -- Social Issues of Computing (3 units) Broad survey of the individual, organizational, cultural, social and ethical issues provoked by current and projected uses of computers. Graduate-level requirements include an additional term paper. |
| NURS 634-- Data Management in Healthcare Systems (3
units) Focuses on development and maintenance of healthcare databases for application in solving healthcare problems. Design methods, database structures, indexing, data dictionaries, retrieval languages, and data security are presented. |
| NURS 646 -- Health Care Information Systems (3 units) Focuses on the theoretical basis of healthcare informatics with an emphasis on management and processing of healthcare data, information, and knowledge. Healthcare vocabulary and language systems, and basic database design concepts are addressed. |
| NURS 650 -- Theory of Systems Management (3 units) Focuses on contemporary organizational theories as they apply to complex healthcare systems. Emphasis is placed on application of theory to organizational analysis and decision making. |
| SIE 511 -- Human Factors and Ergonomic Design II (3
units) Advanced human-centered design with emphasis on human-system interfaces. Applications to computer and information systems, consumer products, manufacturing processes, etc., according to student interest. A project will be required. Graduate-level requirements include separate examinations and a major project. |
| SIE 548 -- Operations Research Modeling
(3 units) Make decisions as to the appropriate modeling tool to use based on the problem setting, the constraints on the solution process, the needs of the decision-maker, and the data available. Building models and obtaining solutions that consider the typical issues that arise when solving real problems, multiple objectives, multiple constraints, stochastic and deterministic elements, sensitivity analysis and unknown data. |
